Elmo and Lucille Johnson

On a check-up visit, Elmo's surgeon, Dr. Bumpous removes bandages to check how Elmo's scars are healing. Elmo felt some tenderness when the cotton was removed -- a good sign, the doctor said, because it means his nerves are healing.

Elmo gets a CAT scan on his face and neck to examine the lumps that Lucille pointed out to his doctor.

Elmo and Lucille Johnson travel 90 minutes to Louisville to see the surgeon. Lucille expressed relief at the news that the bandages can be removed.

Lucille places her hand on Elmo's back, steading him on their back to the car after a hospital visit. Elmo went in for a CAT scan for lumps found in his neck earlier in the week.

Elmo and his wife, Lucille, met in 1947 in Cave City and began dating. She cherishes a black-and-white photo of the two snapped just before their second date. They both say it was love at first sight. They were engaged two months later. Lucille Johnson, Elmo's wife is nostalgically looking at the photograph of the two before their second date, over 56 years ago. Elmo Johnson had surgery for a melanoma the size of a large grapefruit in his face. He lived for two years with the melanoma growing down his neck and ear. Five local doctors dismissed his complains of pain and visible "lumps in the skin of his face." Elmo now has been severely immobilized by the surgery and pain of the cancer he lived with for the two years prior. He is still incredible mobile with the use of his cane, which he seems to mostly drag behind him. He is determined to continue taking care of himself, but appreciates the help and support provided by his wife and family.

Lucille Johnson prepares breakfast for her husband, Elmo, in their home. The TV remains on at all times while they are home. Elmo has just undergone surgery for a tumor found in the right side of his face and Lucille has taken on many of the household chores.
