Kathy Minor started barbering two years ago, and last June she opened her own shop. 'The further south you go,' she said, 'the less the older barbers want to hire a woman.'

'Yeah, I like it,' said Aaron Wheeler, a student from Western Kentucky University. He said he heard about Minor's shop from his girlfriend's father.

Although Kathy Minor runs a barber shop, she often has female customers, too. June Harrington saw Kathy's sign while driving past and decided to stop in.

'Just a little off the back,' Kendall Branstetter tells Kathy. 'I like it long.' Branstetter, who lives in Horse Cave, said he drives the six miles to Cave City for a haircut about every six weeks.

Kathy's husband, Gary Minor, opened the Broadway Barber Shop in June in their remodeled garage. 'Business is picking up,' she said, 'but I need to get out and advertise more.' Between customers, Minor sits outside with the family dog, Prissy.
