After 55 years of smoking, Edna Goodwin must take daily breathing treatments to expand her lungs so she can cope with the ailments of a debilitating respiratory disease.

Because of her diabetes, Edna Goodwin must have a daily insulin shot. She groans an "Ouch" when a needle is inserted in her arm by her son, Maurice Porter. Goodwin also suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which deteriorates her lung tissue. An Hospice official said her illnesses could soon take her life.

Edna Goodwin spends much of her day in the cool light of the window in her kitchen reading the paper, talking on the phone, or watching television.

"My family was never one to kiss and hug, but lately I've been kissing my mom on the cheek every day," Maurice Porter said. Porter's mother, Edna Goodwin, suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Type I Diabetes. Goodwin is now under the care of Hospice, an organization that helps patients cope with their illnesses near the end of their lives.

Edna Goodwin said she enjoys getting out of the house when she feels up to it. The Bardstown Wal-Mart is a popular stop.
