
After 32 years of work at the Maker's Mark distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, Steve Nally will retire at the end of November. The one-time farmer began working at the distillery to make end's meet when he was 21.

Steve Nally, the master distiller of Maker's Mark, spends his three hours sitting in his shaky office figuring out how much grain is needed for the next months production of Maker's Mark Bourbon. Nally's office is directly above mashers that run countinously throughout the day causing the whole building to vibrate.

Steve Nally inspects every batch of bourbon at every stage of the production process, including the fermentation of grain, yeast, and limestone-spring water. Each vat can hold 9,600 gallons of the world renowned whiskey.


Steve Nally checks formulas in a recipe book that?s been used at the Maker's Mark distillery since the brand was created. In his15 years as master distiller, Nally has memorized much of the book.


Scarlet wax rolls down the necks of Maker's Mark bottles before they?re packed for shipment. Each bottle is hand dipped. Four line-workers can put the signature wax seal on as many as 130 bottles a minute.

On this particular afternoon Lea Hardy, 8, and Kayla Boone, 13, (sitting at left and center, above) came to join the fun.

LeeAnn Jones, 2, enjoyed Tuesday morning on her parent's dairy farm by helping her mother rake leafs. LeeAnn is quite the industrious toddler who helps feed dairy cattle, picks up the yard and performs general "mini farm hand" duties on her family's 120-acre farm outside of Loretto, Kentucky.
